Can she make a comeback? Thats the question in this lightly feminist film, which shifts from being a domestic dramedy to an underdog sports tale, a favorite genre of Indian movies. Directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, “Panga” has an understated realism — about the tempos of family life and the Indian middle class. The drama, too, is understated: bumps in a road paved with good will rather than a clash of values and goals. Jaya doesnt have to fight that hard to convince her family that she needs to pursue her sport. Quite the opposite: The idea is her sons initially. And when she makes the team and decamps to Kolkata, father and son have the occasional gentle crisis — Prashant makes a mess of Adis tiger makeup for a school play; his cooking is subpar — but learn to adjust. (One quick fix: Jayas mother swoops in to take up cooking duties. As a sports story, “Panga” is less heart-pounding than sweet. Jaya has to fight her aging body, her teammates idea that shes too old to play (shes all of 32) and societal notions about mothers. As expected, the movie ends with a big tournament, an all-Asia competition, and a climactic match: India versus Iran. But Tiwari is better at probing the emotions under the drama than building a nail-biting, rah-rah finish, though she tries. Throughout, Tiwari doesnt get enough help from her script — she wrote it with Nikhil Mehrotra — which knows the beats to hit but not always how to hit them. The film is fuzzy when you want it to be sharp, its characters too generic to register, particularly Gills one-note Prashant. Not so Ranauts Jaya, who elevates the movie, putting the story across better than the script can. Ranaut makes Jaya credible and specific; shes not an every woman or every mom or every athlete. Pangas protagonist is a former kabaddi player whose life has been subsumed by the tedium of everyday domesticity and jobbery. That Jaya Nigam, played with absolute conviction by Kangana Ranuat, dares to dream of a past life where she was in the spotlight, is a straight-off win, subject-wise. But just how tough is it for a mainstream Bollywood movie to focus on a woman like Jaya, is evident in the long build-up to the point where she can say to her husband: when I think of you, I feel happy. When I think of Adi (her son) I feel happy. But when I think of myself, I am not so happy. Or words to that effect. By that point we are fully primed to support Jaya, because weve seen her do the stuff middle-class, working mothers do every day of their life: wake up early, get the tiffins packed, see off the child to school, make sure the home runs smoothly, and get herself to office only to have to deal with a tetchy boss. Fine, we say, shes done all this smilingly, now she can go off and do her thing, if she wants to. And we say this only because the push-and-shove comes from the son (Bhasin) and the husband (Gill. Phew. What if Jayas bosom buddy and kabaddi mate Meenu (Chadha) who is still so married to the sport that she doesnt have the time for a proper ‘ shaadi, were the ‘heroine? And the having-plumped-for-ghar-and-grihasti-Jaya was the one in a supporting role? What if, horrors, Jaya had ditched her family, not having found enough fulfillment, and merrily gone her way? Nah, we are still far away from that kind of film. Till such time, we will make do with Panga, which gives us an array of wonderful women walking the talk. Ranaut has the courage to go plain-faced, minus pancake: her sure-footedness right through the film, on and off the mat, is spot-on. Chadha, armed with a bouncy pony-tail and buoyant back-chat, is a lot of fun, as is Neena Guptas bracing mother. The two current kabaddi players, whom Jaya spends time with, in the second half, both leave a mark. And its nice that Jaya is made to work hard for her climactic triumph; the victory is then even sweeter. My interest flagged a little post-interval, when the film becomes repetitive and flat, and Chadha is used to explain a scene which has just got done, or about to come, like an old-fashioned ‘sutradhar. But Gill, as the supportive husband, who learns how to function minus his loving wife, is solid, and keeps us going. As does Tailang, in a brief kabaddi official role. Young Bhasin as Adi is a charmer, but is given too much talk-time, and the dialogues he mouths sometimes sound like they are there strictly to be played for laughs. I will take this, if it comes with a film that celebrates a woman trying to reclaim her dream, even if it comes sanctioned by family. The film springs to life when Jaya raises her fist, and slaps her thigh: it is a ‘panga worth taking. This kind of nourishment doesnt even remotely resemble what they eat in nature. But what it does resemble is the method of feeding mad cows (cows were fed cows, remember. What they feed pangas is completely unregulated so there are most likely other dangerous substances and hormones thrown into the mix. The pangas grow at a speed light (practically. 4 times faster than in nature…so it makes you wonder what exactly is in their food? Your guess is as good as mine. 5. Pangas are Injected with Hormones Derived from Urine – I dont know how someone came up with this one out but theyve discovered that if they inject female Pangas with hormones made from the dehydrated urine of pregnant women, the female Pangas grow much quicker and produce eggs faster (one Panga can lay approximately 500, 000 eggs at one time. Essentially, theyre injecting fish with hormones (they come all of the way from a pharmaceutical company in China) to speed up the process of growth and reproduction. That isnt good. Some of you might not mind eating fish injected with dehydrated pee so if you dont good for you, but just consider the rest of the reasons to NOT eat it. 6. You get what you pay for – and then some. Dont be lured in by insanely cheap price of Pangas. Is it worth risking your health and the health of your family? 7. Buying Pangas supports unscrupulous, greedy evil corporations and food conglomerates that dont care about the health and well-being of human beings.
